Reimagining the mobile self-ordering experience on the Ya Kun app

Project Overview

As a team of two designers who are equally passionate about Ya Kun Kaya Toast's coffee and snacks, we embarked on a UX design project to reimagine and enhance the experience of ordering Ya Kun menu items via the mobile app.

Why the Ya Kun app?

Despite Ya Kun being a beloved home-grown brand, the same cannot be said about it’s app.

With a 1.7 star rating on the Google Play Store based on 402 reviews, it is evident that users are mainly unhappy with the app’s lack of self-ordering functionalities.

Nonetheless, the app has 50K+ downloads, which suggests that there is great value in improving its user experience as many would benefit from it.

Empathising with users

We mapped out the current Ya Kun user journey, which revealed how often users had to switch back and forth between physical and in-app actions. This prompted us to look into reducing this friction for users.

After identifying the common thoughts, motivations, and challenges amongst the Ya Kun app users in an Aggregated Empathy Map, we were able to yield 8 key insights.

Personas and customer journeys

We created two user personas and their respective user journeys based on the previously collected insights. We utilized both personas and user journeys as it gave us a deeper understanding of our target audience’s expectations, challenges, and motivations.

Brainstorming the solutions

We turned our insights into opportunities by framing them as How Might We statements. From the 5 that we shortlisted, we brainstormed ideas for each of them to find solutions to meet the needs of Ya Kun app users like both Xiao Ming and Sabrina.

Integrate a map to help users find the nearest Yakun outlet.

Include an advance order function so that users can make their orders on the go, and pick it up from the location after.

Personalise the user’s experience by giving them the options to order their favourites again.

Improve the transparency and accuracy of the vouchers and its applicable stores.

Create a group order feature that allows easy consolidation of everyone’s unique customisations.

Testing and validating

We created mid-fi prototypes of our app and tested it with 5 users, giving them a variety of tasks to complete. We recorded our findings using the Rose, Bud, Thorn method.


This test provided us with validation for the features we introduced. It helped us assess whether their pain points and needs were being met, as well as identify usability issues that might not have been apparent to us.

Feedback from our testers

Prototype iterations

Based on the findings from the user tests, we further refined our prototype by implementing suggestions from our users selectively, as well as addressing the issues spotted by our users.
