SearchSG 🔎 | GovTech
A search engine optimized for government-related search results for both government officials and citizens.
Project Overview
SearchSG aims to improve citizens’ findability in government information and services through enhancing the government website search experience.
During my time as a UX intern at the SearchSG team in GovTech, I worked closely with UX designers, developers, and business analysts on both user research and UX design activities.

Key Takeaways
UI design and design system
The tab component was created after much iteration and consideration of both design and tech feasibility.
As tabs were an add-on feature, there was a need to consider how the component looked in relation to its surrounding components to avoid a visual clash. The team also mapped out its interactions with the other components present.
I also designed the skeleton loading state component, which was meant to lessen users' frustration should the search results page take longer to load. This was the design decision made after researching on and comparing various loading states, of which skeleton states were the most pleasant for users.
Ideation Workshop
Reflections
How to work with developers. Communicating directly with developers was interesting as I did not have prior experience doing so. As I presented and proposed my designs to them, I began to understand their considerations regarding technical feasibilities. Developers would prefer to reuse components that they had built previously to minimise tech costs; they would also sometimes face limitations from the programming languages used, which required design iterations. In the future, I would strive to design with these considerations in mind.
There is always room for improvement. Whenever I felt that there were aspects of SearchSG that could be improved, I consolidated my findings and presented them to the team. After which, we brainstormed together to look for solutions, resulting in an upgrade in the product's quality in the long run.
